Roskilde is one of the oldest Danish cities, situated 30 km west of Copenhagen. The town's name is associated with numerous curative springs, many of which operate today. The ancient capital of the Danes majestically situated on a high hill overlooking the picturesque view of the Roskilde Fjord - a place associated with the legendary history of the Vikings.
Right on the beach lies Vikingeskibshallen museum showing five authentic ships of the Viking Age, raised from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord.
The ships are two warships and three trade ships, recovered to the extent possible. Ships produce a strong and realistic impression, as they are displayed with the fjord in the background.
Here You will learn how the ships were built, how the navigation was done and what geographical discoveries were made during this period. A fjord-tour in a boat which is built according to the rules of the Viking shipbuilding will give You an unforgettable experience.
The true decoration of Roskilde is, without doubt, the Roskilde Cathedral – the tomb of Danish monarchs. The cathedral makes an incredible impression with its size and magnificent interiors, containing historical monuments and great works of art as well as tombs. In one of them there is a column with growth marks of 24 monarchs who visited the place. One of the tallest was, of course, Russian Tsar Peter the Great at 208 cm.
